Prototype Zero: Tactical Programming Race
Prototype Zero is a fast-paced, two-player racing game designed for the 18-card Button Shy contest. Inspired by classic arcade racers like Rad Racer, Spy Hunter, and F-Zero, it challenges players to program their movement and outmaneuver their opponent on a modular track.
The 18-Card Challenge
Creating a compelling racing experience with only 18 cards required a highly efficient design. Every card in Prototype Zero serves multiple purposes, acting as both a piece of the track and a possible item or obstacle.
Tactical Programming
Players plan their route by laying out track cards.
- Positioning: Success depends on where you end your turn. Being in the right lane can set you up for a high-speed dash or allow you to snag a powerful item.
- Interference: Special items allow you to disrupt your opponent’s plans, just like the surprising power-ups in the games that inspired it.
At its core, Prototype Zero is about the tension of high-speed competition condensed into a portable, quick-playing format.
